Background to the project: The Infrastructure Acceleration Fund (the Fund) is a key component of the Government’s $3.8 billion Housing Acceleration Fund announced in March 2021. The Fund is to enable housing development in areas of need throughout Aotearoa New Zealand through the allocation of funds to new and upgraded eligible “enabling” infrastructure such as transport, three waters and flood management infrastructure. The contestable fund available is at least $1 billion.
Queenstown Lakes District is one of the fastest growing in New Zealand and housing affordability is a significant issue. Hawea is identified as a growth area and the Longview development is unlocking affordable housing potential. Longview and future development are subject to the appropriate infrastructure being in place, as the existing Hawea wastewater system is inadequate.
Queenstown Lakes District Council was invited to take its Hawea Wastewater proposal through to the next phase of the funding application process.
